Synopsis
After the deaths of Friedrich Dürrenmatt and Niklaus Meienberg, Max Frisch was something like the last great Swiss intellectual to consciously fulfil this role and to be perceived as such by those around him, both at home and abroad. Since his death in 1991, no other ‘voices’ have taken his place. Instead, in Switzerland, as in other countries, authors and thinkers hardly play a role in social issues and processes any more. And the question arises: do we need their participation at all?
The film tells Frisch’s story as a voice: how this lived contemporaneity came about and ran through his entire life. A look at his path thus simultaneously becomes a look at the history of the 20th century, which Frisch experienced primarily in Switzerland and Germany, but also in other countries, and which he almost completely permeated with his life and writing: a look at our own recent history, from which our present day has emerged.
